Beat Motion Sickness: Top 6 Cruise Survival Tips

The cruise industry is on the upswing, with more tourists discovering the perks of sea travel. Imagine waking up in a new country or city each day without the hassle of packing and moving – it’s easy to see the appeal.

But for some of us, motion sickness can be a real concern. Whether it’s a plane, train, or boat, I struggle unless I take specific measures. So, when my friend surprised me with a Mediterranean cruise, I was pretty anxious.

After doing a lot of research, I’m thrilled to say I didn’t get motion sickness even once during the trip. Here are my six top tips to help others avoid motion sickness on a cruise:

**1. Go Big**
The size of the cruise ship can significantly affect your experience. Larger ships, especially those carrying over 3,000 passengers, offer more stability and less noticeable motion, thanks to modern stabilization technology. For your first cruise, avoid smaller luxury or expedition cruises since they tend to be more prone to movement.

**2. Choose a Lower Berth**
When booking, ask for a cabin lower down in the ship, ideally near the middle. These areas experience less motion, which is important when you’re sleeping. While you may sacrifice a bit on the view, it can make a big difference in comfort.

**3. The Horizon Trick**
If you start feeling queasy, head outside and focus on the horizon. Keeping your eyes steady on the line between the ocean and the sky can help stabilize your nausea. Plus, getting fresh air can be a huge relief.

**4. Avoid Certain Activities**
Steer clear of alcohol, which can worsen seasickness, and avoid watching others who are feeling ill, as it can trigger your own symptoms. Also, try not to read or write while the ship is in motion, as it often leads to discomfort.

**5. Try Ginger**
Ginger is a popular natural remedy for seasickness; you’ll likely find ginger tea or snacks onboard. While it hasn’t worked well for me personally, many swear by it. It’s worth a try if you’re feeling off.

**6. Use Medication If Needed**
Sometimes, the best solution is medication. Over-the-counter options like Dramamine, Bonine, and others have proven effective for many. If these don’t help, consult your doctor about stronger options. Just be sure to test any new medication beforehand to avoid adverse reactions.

By following these tips, I managed to enjoy my cruise without any motion sickness. I hope they can help you have a smooth and enjoyable journey too!
