The Surprising Reasons Behind Holiday Season Illnesses

The holiday season is back! While it’s a time to be happy and festive, it can also bring about sickness. Dr. William Schaffner from Vanderbilt University even refers to the holidays as a “virus-distribution system.”

### Flu Season
As we get closer to the holidays, flu cases start to rise. The influenza virus loves cold weather, making late fall and early winter its prime time. Besides the flu, winter also sees a surge in rotavirus and norovirus cases. These viruses spread through contaminated food and lead to symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever.

### Increased Contact
During the holidays, everyone is out shopping, attending parties, and visiting crowded places. This close contact makes it easier for viruses to spread. Think about all the people touching the same doorknobs and surfaces after sneezing – definitely not a recipe for good hygiene. Fresh air is hard to come by, and you’re constantly exposed to other people’s germs.

### Traveling Germs
Family visits from different places can bring more than just presents. Relatives might unknowingly travel with germs from their own communities, and airplanes don’t help in keeping viruses contained.

### High-Stress Levels
The holiday season often comes with a high level of stress due to numerous parties, dinners, and gift shopping. This stress can take a toll on your immune system, making you more susceptible to getting sick.

### Unhealthy Eating and Drinking
With all the delicious holiday food and treats, it’s easy to overindulge. Unfortunately, this can lead to weight gain and health issues like diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, and stomach flu.

### Lack of Sleep
With so many events to attend, getting enough sleep becomes a challenge. Lack of sleep weakens your immune system, making you more prone to illnesses.

So, while enjoying the holiday cheer, don’t forget to take care of yourself to stay healthy and well.
